Attendees of this session will be able to:
1. Identify the epidemiology, outcomes and major theories regarding pathophysiology of the syndrome of delirium
2. Review recent evidence on delirium prevention/management including
a. Pharmacologic and
b. Non-pharmacologic strategies, and
3. Consider future research strategies including
a. Top-down vs. bottom-up identification of the syndrome.
Presenters
Dr. Karin Jane Neufeld, M.D., M.P.H.
Dr. Karin Neufeld is a graduate of the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Medicine in Canada. After completing a residency and fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a Master of Public Health degree at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, she joined the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine faculty where she was promoted to the rank of Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. In 2023 she was named Professor and Morgan Firestone Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University. Dr. Neufeld’s primary area of academic and clinical interest is in improving delirium prevention and treatment strategies within the acute inpatient setting, with a particular focus on the critically ill and older aged postoperative populations. She is a Past President and Board Member of the American Delirium Society.
