1. Apply a comprehensive approach to the assessment of behavioral symptoms in dementia.
2. Analyze behaviors and create unique behavioral strategies for behavioral symptoms in dementia.
3. Know where to look for and how to connect patients and caregivers with supports in managing behavioral symptoms in dementia.

Dr. Sophiya Benjamin MBBS, FRCPC, DABPN Geriatric Psychiatrist
Dr. Sophiya Benjamin is Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University and Co-Executive Director of GeriMedRisk. Dr. Benjamin works on thoughtful integration of geriatric specialties and secure digital platforms with in-person services to overcome current inequities and inefficiencies in access to care for older adults in Ontario. She completed her training in general adult and geriatric psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina and a masters in health sciences at the Duke-NIH Clinical Research Training Program. Dr. Benjamin served as the inaugural Co-Medical Director at Provincial Geriatrics Leadership Ontario until 2021 and is the current Medical Director for the Specialized Mental Health Program at Grand River Hospital, which provides tertiary mental health services for people across the Waterloo Wellington region. She is the Postgraduate Research Lead at the Waterloo Regional Campus of the Michael DeGroote School of Medicine. She enjoys teaching and mentoring resident physicians and is recipient of several teaching awards including the George Ginsberg Fellowship for excellence in teaching. Her clinical practice includes inpatient work serving individuals with dementia and behaviors, in person consultation for long term care residents and asynchronous virtual care through GeriMedRisk. When she is not providing direct clinical care or planning and implementing innovative programs, you can find her tending to her permaculture garden, or rambling on trails by the Grand River.
