Dr. Shirley Huang, Geriatrician, and Derek Dyks, Clinical Pharmacist, will discuss the issue of pain as it relates to falls and the various medications used for pain control.
Learning objectives/questions include:
- Why do we care about pain and falls?
- What pain can older adults have and why?
- How can one manage pain (without causing more pain)?
- Which medications are used to treat pain?
- Which pain medications should be avoided in our older patients?
- Which pain medications increase fall risk?

Presenters
Dr. Shirley Huang earned her Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 2007. She completed her Internal Medicine and Geriatric Medicine training at UBC, followed by Master of Science in Healthcare Quality at Queen’s University. She joined the Division of Geriatric Medicine at The Ottawa Hospital as a staff Geriatrician in 2015. She is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa and the Medical Director of the Geriatric Medicine Clinics (including memory program, fall prevention program and frailty program) at the Ottawa Hospital. She enjoys all aspects of caring for older adults and their families but has a special interest in dementia, falls, polypharmacy and issues of healthcare quality and patient safety.
Derek Dyks graduated from University of Toronto Pharmacy program in 1993. He has been a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Geriatrics at The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) since 2008. Prior to that he fulfilled the role as a clinical pharmacist for the CTU Medicine Unit at TOH (1998-2008). In his current role, he is responsible for the pharmacotherapeutic needs of the patients admitted to the Geriatric Medicine Unit as well as patients admitted to the Geriatric Medicine Clinics at TOH. He acts as a preceptor for students and pharmacy residents on a regular basis. Derek is a published author whose professional interests include falls in the geriatric population and polypharmacy / deprescribing.
