
Research & Innovation in Aging Forum -1
The Research & Innovation in Aging Forum (RIAF) is hosted by the Centre in Studies in Aging & Health and brings together researchers, clinicians and other stakeholders to discuss research related to aging. The forum is a platform for sharing research ideas, research in progress and completed projects with the goal to augment communication networks, have opportunities for discussion and feedback and to celebrate each other’s’ work.

Research and Innovation in Aging Forum: Toronto Social Capital Study – A Focus on the Social Lives of Toronto’s Seniors
The Centre for Studies in Aging & Health was pleased to host a Research and Innovation in Aging Forum webinar featuring Michael Nicin, Executive Director, National Institute on Ageing, Ryerson University. This included an introduction to the concept of social capital, a discussion of social capital and seniors in Toronto and suggestions for targeted solutions and opportunity to flag current gaps.

Participation Experiences of People with Deafblindness or Dual Sensory Loss
The Centre for Studies in Aging & Health was pleased to feature PhD Candidate Atul Jaiswal for this free Research & Innovation in Aging Forum webinar introducing the condition of dual sensory loss or deafblindness. The characteristics, epidemiology and impact of dual sensory loss on life were explored. The unique participation experiences of three categories of individuals in this population was discussed.

Research and Innovation in Aging Forum: Aging, Privacy & Technology
The Centre for Studies in Aging and Health is pleased to share a copy of our October Research and Innovation in Aging Forum Aging, Technology and Privacy presented by Dr. Lisa Carver. Dr. Carver reviews technology that ‘supports’ healthy aging for people aging in place and in their community, discusses data collected and novel applications of that information and promotes he prevention of unintended and intended violations of older adult’s privacy and autonomy.

Research and Innovation in Aging Forum: Design of Devices to Increase Independence
The Centre for Studies in Aging and Health is pleased to share a copy of our February Research and Innovation in Aging Forum Design of Devices to Increase Independence presented by Dr. Claire Davies. Dr. Davies explores the interdisciplinary collaborations in the design of assistive devices, identifies some overlaps between engineering and health care when working with devices, explains the importance of ensuring the user is paramount in the design process and reviews recent design innovations, developed with older adults in the community, e.g pill box, ostomy bag guide, finger splint.

Research and Innovation in Aging Forum: Gazing Critically at Age-Friendly Communities
The Centre for Studies in Aging and Health is pleased to share a copy of our January Research and Innovation in Aging Forum, Gazing Critically at Age-Friendly Communities on January 17th that was hosted at the Learning & Leadership Centre at Providence Care, 752 King St. W. Kingston, presented by Dr. Mark Rosenberg. Dr. Rosenberg discusses the importance of including the voices of the older population in all discussions about how to make communities age-friendly, analyzes the data in our communities and priority areas of focus that are emerging as trends across the country and variations in the nature of aging across Canada and how data profiles can help us learn more about older adults in our own communities, and geographic trends across our province and country.

Diabetes Within Ontario’s First Nations Peoples
The Centre for Studies in Aging and Health held our May Research and Innovation in Aging Forum featuring Dr. Michael Green’s presentation “Diabetes Within Ontario’s First Nations Peoples” on May 17th from 4-5pm at the Learning & Leadership Centre at Providence Care, 752 King St. W. Kingston, Ontario. Dr. Green shares information about research that takes a closer look at diabetes within Ontario’s First Nations peoples and explores the possible impact of this research and our understanding of the health trajectory of older adults.

The Centre for Studies in Aging and Health held our June Research and Innovation in Aging Forum featuring Dr. Kevin Woo’s presentation at Providence Care, Kingston, Ontario. Objectives of this presentation were to simplify the complexity of chronic wounds and evidence based approach to management, examine the challenges of self management in people with chronic wounds and discuss the need for a policy agenda to address chronic wound care in Canada.

Research & Innovation in Aging Forum: One Year Later – Lessons Learned from the Ontario Age-Friendly Community Planning Outreach Initiative
The Centre for Studies in Aging & Health at Providence Care was pleased to host presenters, Sarah Webster, Knowledge Broker for the Ontario Age-Friendly Community Outreach Initiative and Dr. John Puxty, Associate Professor and Chair of the Division of Geriatric Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Queen’s University. Dr. Puxty provides an introduction to age-friendly communities, summarizes the current status of 56 Ontario Communities that received AFC Community Grant Funds and the ways in which the Ontario Age-Friendly Community Planning Outreach Initiative has increased awareness, connectivity, and capacity across the province.
